What a talented baby

Calvin can now add rolling over from back to tummy to his list of life accomplishments. He isn't supposed to do that for another 2 or 3 months. I'm sure he won't do it again for a while though.

2am diaper change

It is 2am and I am really tired. I just got up to feed Calvin and when I got him out of bed, Calvin was screaming. Not crying, but screaming. His screaming is really quite cute during the day because he just lays there on his blanket, happily making the loudest noises he can, but tonight it was really annoying since I was still half asleep. He started screaming more when I put him down to change his diaper. And wiggling. A diaper change was nearly impossible since every time I tried to put a new diaper on, he screamed and squirmed his way out of it. I was getting pretty frustrated. Then in the middle of it all, he stopped making noise and gave me a big smile.

Then he went back to screaming and squirming.

But at least I didn't kill* him in the meantime.

*Don't worry. I wouldn't have actually killed him. Or hurt him. Just given him a time out in 5 years or something.

I decided that we are going to have to have a million kids because Calvin is so cute and he is growing up so fast!

Here's our little drool machine!

This is Calvin attempting to talk:

And this is a live action shot! He is taking a nap right now and this is what he looks like.

PS Anyone know how to clean a camera lens?

Update on Calvin

Calvin is getting so fun these days!

  • He smiles and makes really cute noises liked he is trying to talk.

  • He doesn't cry nearly as much as he used to.

  • He weighs 12 pounds! He is growing out of his 3 month clothes already, even though he was still wearing newborn clothes 2 weeks ago.

  • He is really good at stretching.

  • He can pull a blanket off his head.

  • He doesn't mind playing by himself on a blanket. He just lays there and wiggles.
  • He has started eating his hands and grabbing onto his burp cloth when it is on his chest.Add Image

Video overload

Videos are a lot of work to transfer to my computer so I did them all at once. Enjoy!

This is the new game Evan taught Calvin. He seems to really like it and he is good at getting the blanket off his head.

My mom gave Calvin a bunch of toys and we thought we'd try them out. It is not how I entertain Calvin all day.

You'll have to turn your head for this one.

This is what Calvin does all day. He is very good at wiggling.

Four reasons to want a baby, one reason not to

Here are some pictures of Calvin:

And in case you think you want to steal him because he is so cute, here's a little reality check. Today Calvin leaked pee out of his diaper onto my shirt. So I changed it. An hour later while I was changing his diaper, he sprayed out a stream of diarrhea all over the floor. I blocked most of it onto the changing pad with my hand, but quite a bit got all over the floor, the boppy, and the shirt I changed out of. This picture doesn't really do it justice since you can't tell that there is a ton of poop all over the dark carpet.

Recent Projects

Matching ties made from one of Evan's ties. I used this tutorial, but instead of elastic, I used velcro sewed onto ribbon and I kept the cut part of the tie from fraying by covering the raw edges with hot glue.

A picture for an empty spot in our kitchen:

Family tree for Calvin's room. It has the names and dates of five generations of Calvin's ancestors. This took forever to make. I started by drawing out the whole thing. Then I made a freezer paper stencil and stenciled the brown outline of the tree onto some green fabric. I glued that onto a piece of Styrofoam that came with our dishwasher, so it looks like canvas stretched over a frame. Then I glued the paper leaves onto the fabric with mod podge. I finished it by coating the entire thing with varnish. I think it turned out pretty well.
This hangs over Calvin's crib and the good thing about this is it is so lightweight that if it ever falls, it won't hurt him.

Calvin's Blessing

Calvin's blessing was this Sunday and we had lots of family come to visit. Unfortunately, I didn't really take any pictures of them. But I took some of Calvin.

On Wednesday, Evan's grandma arrived in town and she took us all out to eat. Thanks Grandma!

Evan's parents and brother came into town on Thursday, which was Lindsey' birthday. Calvin got to meet his grandparents and Uncle Isaac for the first time.

On Friday we spent some more time with Evan's family. Here is Calvin asleep on Grandma Selin's shoulder. Take note of Isaac butting into the back of the picture.

My brother Bruce and his girlfriend Karren also arrived on Friday night and Calvin met them for the first time. They brought him some fun books and a toy. Thanks guys!

On Saturday, my parents and Brian arrived in town. Then we all headed over to Springville for the annual Selin family egg bash. It was fun, as usual, and Evan came out champion!
On Sunday, Evan gave Calvin his blessing. He did a great job. Calvin sorta whimpered and snorted through the whole thing, which was pretty funny.
After church we had a lunch with all my family and Evan's family. There were about 25 people there to celebrate with us. Thanks to everyone for coming!

It was really nice to have everyone here! Calvin was a pretty popular guy and it was nice to have so many people around to hold him, even when he was crying. We need grandparents around all the time!

Calvin just slept for seven hours straight and then two more after eating for 20 minutes. What a great kid!

The medicine dilema

I took Calvin to the doctor today. He weighs 10 lbs, 9 oz and is 23 inches long. He's getting so big!

The doctor prescribed some medicine (Prevacid) to help with Calvin's excessive spitting up problem. I filled it right away at the pharmacy, only to realize after I got it that it cost $52.20. Yikes. Then I went home and read about it on the internet and found out that it isn't really for babies under one year old, although lots of doctors prescribe it for reflux in babies. So I'm a little hesitant to give it to him, but I also want him to stop having so much gas and spit up so he won't cry so much. I'd rather try something a little milder like the Mylicon that Summer mentioned in a comment on an earlier post. I'm not sure if he even spits up enough to need Prevacid. But I already spent the money on the Prevacid and my mom thinks a doctor wouldn't prescribe something dangerous. I just wish I had waited to fill the prescription until after I researched it a little more.

Good News and Bad News

The good news:

Calvin only woke up once last night instead of his usual 2 times. Granted, he went to bed a little later than usual and got up a tiny bit earlier, but I got a 4 hour stretch of sleep followed by a 3 hour stretch. Not bad.

The bad news:

Calvin has been in a bad mood the past few days. Saturday night we went to Dave and Amanda's for dinner and Calvin cried a lot. Yesterday he cried a lot and today was even worse. I've had to hold him pretty much all day to keep him from crying. And that didn't even always work. Plus, he hasn't taken a nap until right now. So no guarantees that we are going to have a happy baby when everyone comes to visit this weekend. Sorry. At least he still likes going on walks outside. (Although now that I said that, he is not going to like going on walks anymore.)
