Taking a Bottle

I'd really like Calvin to be able to drink from a bottle so I can leave him for more than 2 hours at a time and can feed him more easily in public. Anyone know how to do it? He'll suck on the bottle for about three seconds and then will cry when I put it in his mouth. Any suggestions?

Cavin and Hobbes, Part 2

I guess Calvin is going to be a wrestler, just like Daddy. Here are a couple videos of him wrestling his tiger.

Calvin's first sporting event

Calvin went to his first baseball game on Friday night. He had fun being with Mommy.
He liked sitting on Daddy's lap.
He had to wear a baseball cap, of course.

By the time we left, he was pretty tired and just wanted to cuddle with Daddy.

Floral Arrangements

The think I miss most about working is doing floral arrangements. Here are a few of my favorites from the last couple years.

Anyone need some wedding flowers done? I'm itching to get my hands on some flowers.

Here we come potato land.

Well, looks like we'll be heading to Idaho this summer.

Motherhood

When I was younger, I thought I would be a career woman. I thought being a mom would be boring. After I came to college, my perspective began to change. When Evan and I were engaged, I told him I wanted to work for at least a year before we had any kids, and then surprised him several months into our marriage by telling him I didn't want to work at all; I'd rather have a kid as soon as I graduated.

Well, things don't always turn out how we want them to. It ended up taking me longer to get pregnant than I thought it would. (Although I, of course, expected to get pregnant within days of quitting the pill.) I'd like to say that the time I spent waiting to get pregnant made me appreciate Calvin more, but I don't really think it did. I did spend some time working though, which was probably good.

Now that I'm a mom though, I can't imagine anything I'd rather be doing. Not that being a mom is easy, but it sure is rewarding. I thought it would be boring, especially with an infant, but it isn't. The things I get excited about may seem silly, like Calvin grabbing a toy, but it is so fun to watch him develop! It doesn't hurt that he is adorable too.

I am realizing more and more that God put us here in families for a reason. And I'm so glad that through the covenants we have made in the temple, we can be a family forever.

The let cry method

I feel like such a mean mom. I've been using the let cry method the past few days for naps and going to bed. And it is working. But I feel so mean just leaving him in there to cry. I suppose it is better than him not sleeping though. Last night he was really upset so I didn't wait the whole 5 minutes to go in and quiet him down. His heart was racing because he was so worked up! Luckily, he went to sleep right after that.

And here are some unrelated pictures of him:

Graduation is coming!

I was just looking through my old pictures trying to figure out when my last haircut was (I couldn't figure it out. It must have been over a year ago), and I found this picture. Since Evan's graduation is next week, I thought I'd post it to get the excitement started.

That's my brother Bruce smiling away in the back.

Calvin and Hobbes

We are always trying to think of new games to play with Calvin. The other day I put his tiger next to him and he kept knocking it over. That is now known as the "knock over the tiger" game. Here's a funny picture of him.

A few changes

Check out this awesome lamp I got for $3. Evan doesn't think it is quite as awesome as I do. I love the color!
Calvin stole my craft room so I have changed our bedroom from this:

to this:

Now I can start making things again! Until we move out of this shoebox I'll have to be content to carefully ease my way out of bed since there really isn't any room for me AND my craft table.

I used my craft table to make these finger puppets for Calvin to play with during church, but he is still too young to be interested in them. But his cousin Sadie came over the other day and played with them.

A missing feeling in my belly

I was planning on putting Calvin's whole dramatic birth and first week of life story on here but I never got around to writing it. Here's a little snippet though.

The night Calvin was born I felt kinda lonely because he wasn't in my belly. Odd. You wouldn't think you would miss someone kicking you from the inside all the time, but I did. Even the next day after I got to hold him for the first time, I still missed him being in my belly. When he was inside me, I constantly had him with me, but once he came out, we were separated. It was a strange feeling.

He did feel like the same baby though. He kicked and moved his arms the same way he had inside. All the nurses told me he was strong. I could have told them that months before he was born. I had to push him out of my ribs all the time and he pushed right back.

Now I don't miss having him outside my body though. If only I could get my stomach muscles and skin to not miss him...

Yesterday we needed something to do...

so we made our first major purchase. Well, it wasn't a super big purchase. But it is the most expensive thing we have bought since being married besides a c-section, tuition, and monthly rent.

And we decided on it with a coin toss.

Evan wanted the HP with the remote, outer volume controls, and the higher quality feeling keyboard and dvd player. I wanted the Dell with the longer battery life and comparable important stuff that was $100 cheaper. So we tossed a Louisiana state quarter right there in the middle of Best Buy, and good old Louisiana looked up at the bright lights on the ceiling while George Washington pressed his face against the carpet. Evan groaned and we told the sales man to bring us the Dell.

Calvin must have wanted the HP though because when we came home he only ate about half as much as normal and then refused to eat, cried uncontrollably for about an hour, and finally fell asleep in his swing, exhausted from making so much noise. So we haven't even opened Lappy 486 yet.

Sewing machine mishap

Last night while I was waiting for Calvin to fall asleep I decided to get a little sewing in. However, when I started using my machine, the thread got stuck and my machine made an awful grinding noise. Evan and I spent half an hour trying to figure out why it was doing that. We opened it up and cleaned all the lint out, but that didn't fix it. We tried watching how it worked, but the thread just kept getting caught. It appeared that I was going to have to take it in to get fixed. I had pretty much given up when I looked at the upper thread and realized I had forgotten to finish threading it! That was what was causing the problem the whole time! Boy, I felt silly.

Happy 3 month birthday Calvin!

Okay. So I know everyone thinks this about their own baby, but seriously, I am pretty sure we have the awesomest baby.

Hours slept in a row last night: 8.
Total hours slept last night: 10.

Yeah. That's right. Plus, he's adorable.

April Fools

Evan had all sorts of tricks up his sleeve for April Fools Day.

The first one I found was this instead of the plate I was looking for.
Then I found that all the diapers had been pinned shut so I couldn't open them.

There was also soap in the toilet that made the water all bubbly when I flushed it.

And there were socks in the toes of my shoes.

Plus the silverware and the spatula drawers were switched.

I put rocks inside Evan's pillow, but he unfortunately found them before bedtime.

Did you have any fun jokes?

Our little screamer

Can anyone tell me why my child doesn't take real naps?
I've read that babies Calvin's age are supposed to sleep 11 hours at night and 5 hours during the day. Calvin sleeps about 8 at night and 45 mins to an hour during the day. Total. Neither of those are are numbers that happen all at once. Today he took 3 naps that were each 15 or 20 minutes.
One of them happened while I put him down in the laundry room so I just carried him back to the apartment like this.

Another thing Calvin has started doing is sucking on his whole hand.
The funnest thing Calvin has started doing is making noise. In this video he is trying to talk to Grandma Selin in the phone.

He scratched his face in this one and I had to put a bandaid with neosporin on it so it would heal quickly because he was getting pictures taken the next day.

Please ignore the weird way I am saying hi and focus on Calvin's smiles and bubbles.
