Mom and Brian came to visit

Last week my mom and little brother Brian came to visit for a few days. At first Calvin was scared of them but he eventually warmed up to them. It was fun to have them visit!

While my mom was here she got Calvin to laugh. I didn't get a video of Calvin laughing very hard, but it is pretty funny just to watch my mom try to make him laugh.

Here is another video of Calvin laughing from a while ago:

Calvin crawled an inch

Calvin has been moving around a lot lately. He is rolling around all the time, even while he gets his diaper changed, which makes it really hard to put diapers on him.

He has also started working on crawling. He has a long way to go before he will actually be crawling, but he has the right idea so far.

A few sewing projects

Since Calvin has gotten much better at taking naps, I have started doing some more sewing.

When we went to Yellowstone, Calvin was in his car seat so much that his neck started to get big red marks from the straps. So I made him some strap covers. They are reversible.

I also made this pillow cover for the couch. (Thanks for the buttons, Mom!)
And this pillow:

Evan's first father's day

For Father's Day, Calvin got Evan some presents and made a scavenger hunt for him. Here is Evan, whistling away while he tries to find a clue:
Calvin hid one of the clues in his onesie next to his diaper!

Calvin wanted to grab all of Evan's clues.

He found the presents!
And Calvin wanted to open the presents too. Silly boy.

Calvin and I love Evan! He's a great dad for Calvin!

After 5 1/2 months, I must finally be a good mom...

because Calvin is finally taking morning and afternoon naps. Consistently. At almost the same time every day. And he's eating well and sleeping okay at night.

He is loving his solid foods too. I think his favorite is carrots, but he has eaten everything he has tried so far. He still gives a funny face every time he eats peaches, but then he goes ahead and eats them anyway. Here are his homemade carrots:

He loves to pull the spoon to his mouth and put his hand in his mouth while there is food in there. Then he smears it all over his feet and head and bumbo. It is pretty cute.

He is definitely getting heavier too because my arms are starting to get really tired when I hold him.

Naps, sleeping at night, solid foods, lip biting, and my stomach muscles

Well, Calvin is the awesomest baby. We love him. He has become a master at taking morning naps. He has done it pretty much every day since Evan started work. Now I just need to figure out how to get him to take an afternoon nap too and I will finally be a good mother.

The last two nights he sorta slept through the night. He woke up between 10 and 12 both nights because he leaked out the back of his diaper so we got up and changed him and put him back to bed. Then he slept until 5:30 or 6am, which means I didn't have to get up and feed him. But it also means I had to get up too early.

He is now eating two solid food meals a day. So far he has tried rice cereal and peaches. Tonight he is going to try carrots (homemade!). I bet he'll like them because I tried them and they are delicious!

He has also started biting/sucking on his bottom lip. Cute! Sometimes he smacks his lips too.

I tried doing an ab workout video today and couldn't do it. My muscles wouldn't move. I can't lift my feet off the ground while laying on my back without bending my knees. Stupid pregnancy/c-section. My stomach will be flabby forever.

Sucking on toes

We mentioned earlier that Calvin can grab his feet now. Well, recently he took it one step further and started putting his feet in his mouth!

I made a thing

I haven't really done much sewing since I've been here because I've been too busy cleaning, doing yard work, and playing with Calvin. However, I did make him a couple of bibs. Only one is posted here because the other one is pretty boring.

This was my first time making my own bias tape and doing an applique. And my first time gluing on giant googley eyes.

Calvin and I go outside pretty much every day. He sits in his stroller while I weed. He usually likes being outside for about 20 minutes and then he gets grumpy. On Sunday Evan came outside with us and when Calvin started getting grumpy, he gave Calvin his dirty old soccer ball. Calvin really liked it, but I won't be giving it to him because it is too dirty.

Baby kisses

Calvin has started giving me kisses... or is he eating my face? I'll let you decide. Either way, it is very wet.

Here they are

Look closely and you can see Calvin's new teeth. It was a miracle he held still long enough for me to get these pictures.

Those little teeth are sharp too. He bit my finger and it kinda hurt. I think he bit his too because he randomly started screaming a few minutes ago after sticking his finger in his mouth. I think he has noticed them too because he keeps moving his tongue over his teeth, kinda like when you loose a tooth and always stick your tongue there to feel the hole.

"BREAKING" NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!

Calvin's bottom two front teeth have broken through the gums!

Garden problems

I planted a garden a few weeks ago and I am just realizing how much work it is going to be. First of all, this place has a billion weeds. This isn't a picture of the garden, but the garden will look like this soon if I don't stay on top of it. Right now there are about 3 weed seedling per square inch that I need to get rid of. That's a whole lot.
Plus, I think the birds have been eating my seeds. A bunch of the peas, squash, and cucumbers aren't coming up.

And we have the pesky bunny to deal with. It sits by the garden all day long. Yesterday the little stinker ate half a row of peas straight down to the ground. I'm so mad. I've been reading up on how to keep bunnies away and last night I put pepper all over the plants. Evan is going to cut his hair today and we are going to sprinkle that around. Every time I see it, I chase it out of the garden.

The good news is, at least a few of each thing (minus yellow squash and cucumbers) have sprouted. Here are a few examples:

The lone zucchini:

And I planted my tomatoes in pots so we can take them with us at the end of the summer.

Just like his grandpa

When I was a kid we always teased my dad about "resting his eyes" during church. Many people refer to what he did as the "high priest head bob." Looks like Calvin does it too. This video was taken during family home evening a couple weeks ago.

Yellowstone: The Park, Day 2

On Friday we drove the upper loop of Yellowstone. We saw two bears, a bunch of buffalo, and some steaming Earth.

The first place we stopped was called something like roaring mountain. It was just a mountain that poured out steam, but didn't have any pools or geysers. Just things called fumaroles. Pretty cool.

Next, we made it to Mammoth Hot springs. Though they were cool, they aren't what they used to be. A lot of them don't have running water in them anymore. Everyone thought Calvin was so cute in the baby carrier.
Our last stop was the grand canyon of Yellowstone. We stopped to look at the awesome waterfall and take a peak down the canyon. You can't tell from any of the pictures, but it was really steep and very cool looking.

That night we made it home safe and sound, although I had to spend the last half hour of the car ride making bomb noises because for some reason that is what calms Calvin down. Overall, it was a successful vacation. We're glad we went!

Yellowstone: The Park, Day 1

When we first arrived in the park, we saw some buffalo within the first ten minutes. We pulled over to take a look.
Little did we know, we would be seeing a lot more throughout our trip and there was no need to pull over and look at them.
We even saw babies! One of them was drinking milk from its mom.
Our plan for the first day was to see Old Faithful. Calvin didn't want to I guess because he promptly fell asleep with his hat over his eyes.
While we were waiting for Old Faithful to erupt, we looked at the other springs and geysers. One of them seemed to be erupting all the time.

While we were walking around we saw (and heard) a yellow bellied marmot. They are noisy and cool to watch. We saw a coyote too.
This is me in front of Old Faithful while we were waiting for it to start.

Later, we stopped to look at a big colorful pool Evan wanted to see but all we could see was the steam coming off of it. This picture is near the pool. We thought the orange ground was cool. A lot of people were more interested in looking at cute little Calvin than the hot springs!

Yellowstone: Calvin's first time swimming

Our hotel in Yellowstone had a swimming pool so we took Calvin swimming for the first time. To prepare for it, we went to Walmart and bought Calvin some swimming diapers and some shorts, but not a swim suit. Apparently they don't sell swim suits in his size. Or swimming diapers. He ended up wearing a swimming diaper over a regular diaper because his swimming diapers were so big. Is that weird? We didn't know what else to do.

Me and Calvin before we went down to the pool:

When we first got to the pool, there were a bunch of kids in there that were screaming, so every time Evan tried to take Calvin into the pool, he would start to scream. We finally got him to go in the water without complaining, but he was a bit scared at first. After he realized that it was okay, he had a little fun and smiled at us.

We ended up getting out when I accidentally let a little water get in his face and he started crying.

Isn't he cute all wrapped up in his towel?

Yellowstone: the hotel

We spent last Thursday and Friday in Yellowstone. Thursday night we stayed in a hotel and Calvin did really well. He fell asleep around 8 after we went swimming and slept until 5:30am. I even had to wake him up to feed him!

I didn't get much sleep because you could hear EVERYTHING through the walls and the ceiling. I think the people above us must have weighed 300 pounds and they went to bed at midnight and got up at 6. But Calvin slept through it all.

We had two beds in the room so Calvin got his own big bed all to himself. He even fell asleep while Evan was watching the Suns game and slept through the part where Evan started jumping up in the air and almost yelling.

In the morning, he just relaxed and hung out on his bed again. He loved it!
We were glad to stay in a hotel instead of camping. Camping would be way to hard with a baby when it is that cold outside. Plus, the hotel had a swimming pool. Check back tomorrow for a post about Calvin swimming.

Craters of the Moon

Last week Evan's start date got pushed back again (he started yesterday) so we decided to take a couple of mini vacations. We spent one day going to Craters of the Moon National Monument. It was pretty cool.

We saw lots of lava formations, climbed a big round lava cone, and explored a lava tube cave. Calvin was kinda grumpy that day, but we had fun anyway.
